St. Croix Track Club Mustangs athletes at the Champions United meet in Georgia, where the team earned gold medals, personal bests and a near-record 4x100m relay performance.

Thirteen athletes from the St. Croix Track Club, known as the Mustangs, traveled to McDonough, Georgia, on May 30 to compete at the Champions United Track & Field Meet, where the team recorded several personal bests and earned multiple medals across sprint, hurdle, jump, middle-distance and relay events.

The athletes, ranging in age from 11 to 18, competed in conditions described by the team as extremely hot and unfamiliar. Many participated in three to five events, including the 100m, 200m, 400m, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, 800m, long jump, high jump, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay.

Among the team’s top performances was Charlise Morris’s gold medal in the long jump. Morris won the event with a leap of 5.33 meters, setting a new personal best. She also placed third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.47 meters, another personal record.

The Mustangs also earned gold in the 4x100m relay, where Yahraya Doctrine, Rajon Charles, Juvante Hurst and Jah’Quan Creque clocked 43.27 seconds. The time left the team just nine hundredths of a second short of the Virgin Islands U20 record.

In the 4x400m relay, Juvante Hurst, Yahraya Doctrine, Julio Soto and Jah’Quan Creque secured another gold medal, finishing in 3:46 to close the meet.

The team also recorded numerous personal bests, including sprint improvements from Malachi Maclorrain, Juvantia Hurst, Khaiem Hansen, Eve Frederick, Sophia Clarke and Faith Eatmon. Maclorrain also had a field event breakthrough, winning gold in the high jump.

“Our athletes competed extremely well under the harsh conditions, and I am truly proud of them,” said Coach Juan Robles, Head Coach of the under 13 athletes and Assistant Coach for the over 13 athletes. “They showed true grit, embraced the challenge, and represented the Virgin Islands with honor. Their performances reflect the discipline, heart, and commitment that define our program.”

The St. Croix Track Club extended thanks to parents, coaches and the VI Lottery for their support and assistance.
