ST. CROIX — A nine-member delegation from the St. Croix Track Club delivered an 11-medal performance at this weekend’s Association of Youth/Junior Athletics League Championship Finals, standing out against a competitive field of approximately 1,500 athletes from more than 60 clubs.
The meet took place on May 9 at Ana G. Mendez University’s Gurabo campus. Each athlete competing in the finals had earned a place in the championship after four qualifying meets held earlier in the season.
St. Croix Track Club athletes earned two gold, five silver and four bronze medals. Despite being one of the smaller clubs in attendance, the team finished 13th in the overall standings, with points awarded to the top eight finishers in each event.
Faith Eatmon, competing in the Girls 14-15 division, was singled out for her stellar performance. She won gold in the 400-meter event with a personal best time of 59.71 seconds, then added silver in the 200-meter race with a time of 26.36 seconds.
Jahlaya George, competing in the Girls 18-19 division, was the team’s other gold medalist, placing first in the javelin with a throw of 15.10 meters.
Other St. Croix Track Club medalists included Charlise Morris in the Girls 14-15 division, who won silver in the 100 meters and bronze in the 200 meters; Juvante Hurst in the Boys 16-17 division, who earned silver in the 400 meters; Rajon Charies in the Boys 18-19 division, who won silver in the 100 meters; and Jah’Quan Creque in the Boys 16-17 division, who also earned silver in the 100 meters.
Yahraya Doctrine, competing in the Boys 18-19 division, won bronze in the 100 meters, while Kahlan Beaupierre, also in the Boys 18-19 division, earned bronze in the javelin.
The medal haul capped a strong showing for the Crucian athletes, who competed successfully against a large field of regional clubs after advancing through the qualifying rounds.
