ST. THOMAS — A St. Thomas man is facing DUI-related charges after police say he flipped his Jeep Wrangler over a guardrail on Nicholas Friday Drive while driving under the influence of alcohol.
Officers responded Sunday afternoon to a reported accident just past the former Loveland Travels Building, where they found the Jeep over the guardrail and in the bushes. The driver, Timothy Curry, was sitting on the roadside nearby.
According to police, officers smelled alcohol on Mr. Curry’s breath when they began speaking with him. They also observed that his eyes were red and watery, and that he appeared unable to maintain his balance, even while seated.
Police said Mr. Curry ignored questions about whether he had consumed alcohol before driving, but agreed to undergo standardized field sobriety tests at the Traffic Investigation Bureau.
Once there, police say he was unable to satisfactorily complete at least two of the three tests. One test was discontinued “for his safety,” according to the police report.
A chemical analysis of Mr. Curry’s breath later showed a blood alcohol level more than 2.5 times over the legal limit, police said.
Mr. Curry was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, negligent driving and illegal blood alcohol content.
He was released after posting $1,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning for his advice of rights hearing.
