ST. JOHN — A man wanted in Florida on a failure-to-appear warrant was arrested Tuesday in Cruz Bay, St. John, after U.S. Marshals in the Virgin Islands developed information linking him to a tattoo shop licensed under one of his aliases.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Robert Gary, 50, was apprehended on June 2 at approximately 12:15 p.m. while walking near the U.S. Post Office in Cruz Bay. He was taken into custody without incident.
The arrest was carried out by U.S. Marshals in the District of the Virgin Islands, with assistance from the Virgin Islands Police Department Special Response Team and special agents from the Virgin Islands Department of Justice.
Mr. Gary was the subject of a collateral lead sent from the Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force in Jacksonville. He was wanted on a failure-to-appear warrant out of Jacksonville for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, resisting without violence, and other traffic-related charges.
U.S. Marshals investigators in St. Thomas developed information connecting a tattoo shop in Cruz Bay to the case. The shop was licensed to Eric Gary, which authorities said was an alias on record for Robert Gary.
Investigators later positively identified Mr. Gary in Cruz Bay and arrested him.
The U.S. Marshals Service said its task forces combine the work of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to locate and arrest fugitives. The agency said those task forces are focused on reducing violent crime by locating and apprehending wanted individuals and serving as a central point for agencies to share information on fugitive matters.
In 2025, the U.S. Marshals Service said it arrested 73,323 fugitives and cleared 87,984 warrants, averaging about 293 fugitive arrests per day.
